Solo Culinary Destination

Among those who like delicious food, Solo is famous as one of the cities in Indonesia which is the "warehouse" of delicacies. An extraordinary variety of drinks and foods can be easily found in Solo. You will be spoiled by the diversity of foods which are scattered in various corners of this city, which presents a distinctive taste, exotic, and rare that can't be found elsewhere.

1. Nasi Liwet

Nasi Liwet ( Liwet Rice ) is the most famous special food of Solo. Nasi Liwet is rice that cooked with chicken broth so makes the rice flavor tasty and smell delicious. The rice is mixed with spicy squash soup, boiled eggs, shredded chicken meat, kumut (made from thickened coconut milk). Served with a banana leaf that formed “pincuk” as a plate. The seller of nasi liwet can be found in many areas of Keprabon, open from 4 pm.

2. Timlo Solo

Timlo Solo is cleary soup dishes containing chopped fried sausages, boiled eggs (boiled egg soup with tamarind) and slices of chicken gizzard and liver. This menu is eaten with white rice sprinkled with fried onions. Different from other areas, timlo solo does not use sohun (transparent bean flour vermicelli ) and mushrooms. 3. Tengkleng

Tengkleng is a kind of goat curry but the broth does not use coconut milk. Tengkleng contains goat bones with a little meat attached, along with the intestines, bowel satay, brain and other organs such as the eyes, ears, cheeks, legs, and others. The enjoyment of eating tengkleng will be felt when we eat away a little meat attached to the bone and suck the contents. This food can be found next to the gate of Klewer Market and  Tengkleng stall Yu Tentrem on Jl Letjend Sutoyo.

4. Pecel Ndeso

Pecel Ndeso is rice “pecel” (salad made of blanched vegetables) from brown rice with mixed vegetables that containing leaves start from the banana heart, kenikir, petai china leaves, sesbania flowers, and string beans, white or black sesame sauce. Eaten with fried eel, fried stingray wader, fried eggs, solo sausage, bongko (red bean and coconut), gembrot (coconut and simbukan leaves), brain and fried iso. The famous pecel ndeso stalls in Solo is Warung Tempoe Doeloe on Jl. Dr. Supomo 55 Pasar Mbeling, otherwise this food also being sold by the seller (usually mothers) around the village

5. Gudeg Ceker

Gudeg Ceker based on claw ( chicken feet ), which became a companion that is served with gudeg (young jackfruit cooked in coconut milk with spices). The claw is boiled with herbs coconut milk so it feels soft and delicious. In addition to gudeg, the claw can also be served as a companion of porridge. This paired menu will be more delicious when is doused with sauce fried krecek sambal. Gudeg ceker can be found on Jl. Wolter Monginsidi Margoyudan, Gudeg Ceker stall Bu Kasno that open starting at 2 am and Gudeg Stall in the north of Warung Pelem intersection open from 7 pm.

6. Selat Segar Solo

Selat Segar Solo (solo fresh salad)  is one form of mixing food between western origin fry dishes with local tastes. Selat solo is an adaptation of a salad consisting of sliced meat, coupled with stew carrots, green beans, boiled egg (egg soup with tamarind), potato, mayonnaise and fresh soy sauce. Famous selat solo stall are selat mbak Lies Serengan and Kusuma Sari Restaurant in Nonongan intersection.

7. Soto Gading

Soto Gading is the most famous soup stall in Solo city. The soup served with rice. There are also served perfect dishes on the visitor’s tables. With a distinctive flavor, this stall has always been a culinary tourism destination.

8. Sambal Tumpang

Sambel tumpang consists of white rice with a variety of boiled vegetables such as spinach, bean sprouts, and green beans then smothered in a thick sauce made from coconut milk and “tempe sangit” (tempe that started to rot) that is smoothed. Sambel tumpang can be found at Manahan Stadium and traditional markets.

9. Sate Buntel 

Sate buntel is Solo particular goat satay made from finely chopped goat meat , flavored with onion and pepper , then  wrap with goat fat . Eaten with soy sauce , sliced chili , red onion , shredded cabbage and tomato . Another menu is kikil goat satay and marrow gule . Sate bunte stalls can be found at Jl  Sutan Syahrir  Tambak Segaran.

10. Sate Kere

Sate Kere ( kere satay ) is very unique because the main menu is tempe gembus satay, tempe is made from soybeans leftovers of tofu production . Otherwise there is also a cow bowel satay, such as lung , spleen , liver , iso , torpedoes , kidney , and tripe . Before it was burnt, this foods was submerged in special ingredients . While the seasoning to eat that is peanut sauce, with beans that are not too much so it feels lighter . Sate kere can be found in the south of the stadium Sriwedari , Yu Rebi stall and in front of  Marsudirini kindergarden.

11. Gule Goreng

There is other way to enjoy goat curry that called Gul-Gor ( Gule Goreng – Fried Curry) . Goat curry with thick coconut milk is cooked on a charcoal brazier ( anglo-stove ) until dry. This process will make the meat more tender and create a unique and special flavor . The sellers of Gulgor can be found at Jl . Diponegoro, next to the former Dedy Teather and in front of the Kustati hospital Pasar Kliwon.

12. Cabuk Rambak

Cabuk Rambak usually is sold around the village on an ordinary day . When sekaten celebration comes, it can be found in the courtyard of the Great Mosque . Food with main menu ketupat (rice cake boiled in a rhombus-shaped packed ofplaited yong coconut leaves) is very special in Solo. Ketupat is often called as gendar-janur (coconut gendar), because rice as the main ingredient is cooked in braided coconut/ young coconut leaves. The different between this ketupat with the food ketupat in other areas is the special spices . Cabuk seasoning uses sesame fried with coconut milk, chili , garlic , nutmeg and brown sugar. This food is eaten with karak , a type of rice crackers as essential ingredients.

13. Wedangan 
Wedangan is one place where Solo citizen socialize. Not only as a place to sell many kinds of foods, but also is a place to relax, exchange information with a distinctive atmosphere . On a table or  unique cart served rice that wrapped in small pieces and various dishes that are very familiar to the tongue as a daily foods . Visitors can freely take food which served. While drinking hot tea , coffee , or hot ginger visitors can get along with others. The interesting of this place is the form of trust between sellers and buyers. Customers only need to say what has been eaten and seller readily counted . Wedangan can be found in every corner of Solo city.

14. Bakmi Toprak

Bakmi Toprak Solo ( Noddles Thoprak Solo ) is different from noodles with Ketoprak Jakarta. Bakmi Toprak solo consists of yellow noodles, shredded cabbage, fried tofu, fried eggs and fied sausage, then doused with broth and  “tetelan” slices also a sprinkling of cooked onions and celery. As a complement can be added karak ( rice crackers ).

15. Serabi Solo

Serabi Solo (Solo pancake) unlike other regions. This snack is not eaten with sweet coconut milk because the taste is already soft and savory. Serabi solo made from rice flour, sugar, and coconut milk. Serabi solo shaped like a round plate with a crust around it. Serabi solo uses various kinds of topping such as chocolate sprinkles, jackfruit, and banana slices.

16. Intip

Intip is a rice crust that is sun dried, then fried in the hot oil. After cooked, it is spreaded with salt and brown sugar liquid . It tasted because the pollen of rice that collects at the crust  in the bottom of a pot . Intip often found in the gift shop Klewer Market area ,  Jongke Market , Singosaren Market , in front of Orion store , and intip stores in north Mangkunegaran.

17. Dawet Ayu Pasar Gede

Dawet Ayu Pasar Gedhe is different from other dawet. This dawet comes from cendol that made from rice flour or “Onggok”, black sticky rice, and sweet basil doused with translucentpalm sugar syrup. It's available in Pasar Gedhe Hardjonagoro in the morning.

18. Gempol Pleret

Gempol Pleret consists of rough rice made a circle with the diameter approximately 1.5 cm. The spheres are then doused with coconut milk and palm sugar. Gempol Pleret can be found in front of the Varia Abon store, Coyudan in the morning and many are also sold around the village.

19. Wedang Dongo

Wedang Dongo is a ginger-flavored beverage which is similar to wedang ronde. Wedang dongo consists of a sphere made from glutinous rice flour that contains mashed beans and sliced kolang kaling, then doused with sweet ginger water.

20. Tahok

Tahok , a kind of food that is said originated comes from China , made from soybean dregs that clumping as gelatinous flabby , then doused with a mixture sauce of sugar and ginger so its make feels warm. Seller of tahok can be found in northern of Kretek Gantung, Lodji wetan or in the south of Pasar Gede.

21. Susu Segar (fresh milk)

With the main menu of pure fresh milk, visitors can order another menu such as milk with syrup, chocolate milk , ginger milk, honey milk,  and even milk with eggs. Served in a hot or cold conditions while enjoying delicious pure fresh milk, also provided a variety of snacks as a distraction of drink milk. Milk can be found in Lodji Wetan which is open from late afternoon.

22. Rambak petis

Rambak Petis is one of the unforgotten snacks when looking for unique souvenirs of Solo. It made from cow and buffalo skin; this snack is processed looks like making crackers. The unique of this kind of food is the “petis.” Petis is kind of soy sauce that served with rambak, made from beef broth processed with sugar and special ingredients.
