One of the interesting attractions near Surakarta is Sangiran Museum, located in the Dome area of Sangiran, Sragen. The dome situated in Solo Derivation, at the foot of Mount Lawu (approximately 17 km from the city of Solo).

The presence of Sangiran is an example picture of past human life because this site is the place of the most complete early human fossils in Java. The broad reach 56 km2 covering three districts in Sragen, namely Sub Gemolong, Kalijambe, and Plupuh, and one area in Karanganyar district, the District Gondangrejo.

Sangiran is an important site for the development of various fields of science, in particular for research in the fields of anthropology, archeology, biology, paleoanthropology, geology, and of course to the area of tourism. The existence of Sangiran site is very useful for studying prehistoric human life because the location is equipped with ancient human fossils, the results of early human culture, flora and fauna fossils and their old stratigraphy picture.

Sangiran bypassed by a breathtaking river, which empties into the Kali Cemoro the Bengawan Solo. This area contains erosion of soil so that the soil layer is formed markedly different between soil layers with each other soil layers. In this soil layers which until now commonly found fossils of ancient humans and animals.

Some early human fossils preserved in the Museum of Geology, Bandung, and Paleoanthropology Laboratories, Yogyakarta. Judging from the findings, Sangiran is a prehistoric site that has a vital role in understanding the process of human evolution and is the most extensive archeological sites in Asia and the world.

Based on this, Sangiran site designated as a World Heritage No. 593 by the World Heritage Committee during the 20th anniversary year in Merida, Mexico.

Research on early humans and ancient animals preceded by G.H.R.Von Koenigswald paleoanthropologist from Germany who worked for the Dutch government in Bandung in 1930. He is a person who has contributed training people to recognize Sangiran fossils and the correct way to treat the fossils were found. The results of the study and then collected at the village head's house Krikilan, Mr. Totomarsono, until 1975.

At that time, a lot of tourists who come to visit these places then came the idea to build a museum. Sangiran Museum was originally built on a land area of 1,000 m2, located next to the Village Hall Krikilan. A representative museum was built in 1980 by considering the increasing number of fossils found, and also to serve the needs of tourists will travel comfortable place. The building area of 16 675 m2 with the museum area of 750 m2.

The building style joglo and consists of exhibition space, auditorium, laboratory, library, audio-visual (where the film about the life of prehistoric man), storage facilities, mosque, toilets, parking area, and souvenir stalls (particularly sell handicraft 'beautiful stone philosopher 'raw materials obtained from Kali Cemoro).

In Sangiran Museum continued to reform and additional buildings and facilities support to reinforce its presence as a world heritage which has an important role in the development of science and to create comfort for the tourists who visit this place. Sangiran Museum now has evolved into a magnificent museum with modern architecture.

Sangiran Museum Collection

Here are some collections that are stored in the Museum Sangiran:
1. Human fossils, among others, Australopithecus africanus (replica), Pithecanthropus mojokertensis (Pithecanthropus robustus) (replica), Homo soloensis (replica), Homo neanderthal Europe (replica), Homo neanderthal Asia (replica), and Homo sapiens.
2. Fossil vertebrates, among others Elephas namadicus (elephant), Stegodon trigonocephalus (elephant), Mastodon sp (elephant), Bubalus palaeokarabau (buffalo), Felis palaeojavanica (tiger), Sus sp (pork), Rhinoceros sondaicus (rhino), Bovidae (cow, bull), and Cervus sp (deer and sheep).
3. Fossils of marine and freshwater animals, among others Crocodilus sp (crocodile), fish and crab, shark teeth, sp Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus), mollusks (class Pelecypoda and Gastropod), Chelonia sp (turtles), and foraminifera.
4. Rock, among others, chert, chalcedony, meteorites, and diatoms.
5. Stone artifacts, such as flakes and blades, planer and drill, square axes, stone balls and ax-penetak perimbas.
